Kinja'd!!!

Just needed a block heater and a set of nokian hakkapeliittas.

I have to temper the urge to scandi flick every other corner.

Dude.. why'd you need to do Scandi flicks in a RWD car with enough power to do throw the rear out with a "stomp" on the "go faster" pedal? Scandi flicks on FWDs and AWDs :)

Red Deer Alberta. About an hour north of Calgary.

It was -25 Celsius last night. -12 right now. It's awful.

It's okay where I am now, but it's going to get pretty cold later. According to google, it's going to hit like 62 degrees out. I might have to close my windows.

He can do it if he wants to, it's only an entry procedure after all. Not sure if more sideways is ever a bad thing

can anyone explain to me exactly why one would need a block heater?

When it's really cold your oil gets thick and doesn't get around quickly enough, potentially causing damage. The block heater warms the oil so that it's viscous enough to quickly lubricate the engine on a cold start. You plug your car in a few hours before you want to start it (most people just leave them plugged in overnight) and it starts easy.

It is power oversteers that I do most often. It's stupid easy and it lets me experience the beautiful balance the car has.

I once spent one winter in Finnish Lapland as a test engineer. There every car is plugged to an electrical outlet if it they are parked for more than an hour.

Many new cars don't any more have proper block heaters (heater element mounted in a place of a freeze plug) and they are just clamped against some pocket in the block but they aren't in direct contact coolant. But here nearly every new car has some kind of engine heating device.

Could studded Hakkapeliitta tires be legal in Canada?

Studs are legal here. Not Canada wide mind you. I think they are still banned in Ontario.

In British Columbia, they're permitted from October 1 to April 30. The Oct. 1 date is pretty ridiculous, though, because it's the same day that winter tires are required by law on our mountain highways.

In Finland winter tires are required from December to March but studs are optional.

Studs are optional in B.C. as well.

The problem I see with the regulation here is that if your sole set of winter tires are studded, you can't legally drive with them before Oct. 1, and you can't drive without them (on many highways) after Oct. 1. Unless you change them in your driveway, you'll be breaking at least one of the laws.

Anyway, I think studs are great only for a short time, at least on older, cheaper designs. Once they get worn, they get rounded and act like ball bearings. Given the choice between an older-style snow tire with studs and a modern soft-compound, heavily siped winter tire (like Hakkapeliittas, Blizzaks, etc.), I'll take the sipes every time.

Its slightly different situation here. Studded are only legal for short time but M+S is okay in all times. But here nearly all vehicles have two sets of tires.

But we can change to studded winter tires before December if the weather starts to become icy. Usually we switch to winter tires when the first cold days arrive in October (I have had them for two weeks now). And in the spring the studded tires have to be removed after ice season has ended. The extreme deadline is fixed to the Easter holidays (which move yearly).
